Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are best. In autumn I clear out falling leaves before they rot over winter; in spring I get the pond ready before the fish become active.
For most cleans the fish stay in the pond while I vacuum. For a full drain-down I hold them safely in aerated tanks filled with their own pond water, then return them once the water is right.
