How Much Does Pond Cleaning Cost?
There is no single price for cleaning a pond, because no two ponds are the same. Here is what decides the cost, so you know what to expect before you ask for a quote.
Size and depth of the pond
The bigger and deeper the pond, the longer it takes to vacuum out and the more water has to be handled. A small patio pond can be done in a couple of hours; a large koi pond can take a full day or more.
How much sludge and weed there is
A pond that is cleaned every year has a thin layer of silt. A pond that has not been touched for five years can have a thick layer of sludge, leaves and blanket weed on the bottom, which takes much longer to remove and dispose of.
Fish
If you have fish, especially koi, they need to be looked after during the clean. For a full drain-down I hold them safely in aerated tanks of their own pond water and return them once the water is right. That extra care is part of the job and part of the quote.
Filters, pumps and UV
Many pond problems start in the filter. Cleaning the filter media, checking the pump and replacing a UV bulb take extra time, but they are often what keeps the water clear after the clean.
Access and waste
Easy access from a driveway or side gate is quicker than carrying equipment through a house. Sludge and weed also have to go somewhere: usually onto your borders or compost, which is free, or taken away if you prefer.
One-off clean or regular maintenance
A pond that is maintained a few times a year rarely needs a big, expensive clean-out. If your pond is in good shape now, a maintenance plan is usually the cheapest way to keep it that way.
