When Is the Best Time to Clean a Pond in the UK?
Clean at the right time of year and the pond recovers in days. Clean at the wrong time and you can stress fish and disturb wildlife. Here is how to time it.
Autumn: the best time for most ponds
September to November is the best time for a full clean in most UK gardens. Frogs, newts and insects have finished breeding, fish are still active enough to cope, and you can clear out falling leaves before they sink and rot over winter. A pond net over the water in autumn keeps most leaves out.
Spring: a good second choice
March to May works well for fish ponds, once the water starts to warm up and the fish become active. It gets the filter and water ready for the growing season. In wildlife ponds, be careful of frogspawn and tadpoles in early spring.
Summer: light work only
Warm water holds less oxygen, so a big clean in hot weather can stress fish. In summer stick to light jobs: pulling out blanket weed, topping up with dechlorinated water, cleaning the filter and keeping an eye on the water quality.
Winter: leave it alone
In cold weather fish slow right down and rest near the bottom, where the water is warmest. Disturbing the pond then can harm them. Keep a small area free of ice and leave big jobs until spring.
How often should a pond be cleaned?
Most garden ponds need a full clean every one to three years, with lighter maintenance in between. Ponds with lots of fish, overhanging trees or a small filter need more frequent care. Signs it is time: green or cloudy water, a bad smell, lots of blanket weed, or fish gasping at the surface.
Wildlife ponds and ponds with frogs
Wildlife ponds need a lighter touch. Clean only part of the pond at a time, and leave anything you take out on the edge for a day or two so creatures can crawl back into the water.
